Rail networks require constant and secure communications, to ensure the safety and efficient operation of rolling stock, both for passengers and freight. Communication is required with moving trains as well as between stations and the rail network, to monitor status, broadcast advisory information and handle emergencies. The need for security and priority over other forms of mobile communication has led to the development of an international wireless communication standard for railways - GSM-Railway - which can be integrated with rail traffic management systems.

Burnside has developed products that support the GSM-Railway standard, which is being introduced gradually to all European track building and upgrades, to replace existing incompatible in-track cable and analogue railway radio networks. The Burnside P400 Series Tough Phone is designed as a weatherproof, vandal-resistant solution for this requirement.
